How To Resign

How to resign, a few resignation tips from YourIsleofManJobs.net

If you’re raring to start your new job . If you resign well and all goes smoothly your employer will be sorry to see you go and your ex-colleagues will remember you as a good co-worker as you leave to start your new career.

The first thing to do is look at your contract if employment

Does your current employer’s contract have a notice period?

If you’ve not been given a contract yet, its likely that you’ll be able to terminate your current employment with immediate effect.

You are legally obliged to work your notice period, that is unless your employer allows you not to. If you do work your notice, you should do a good job as it is likely that your soon to be ex-employer would expect you to have your mind on your new job and start making mistakes.

If you’ve agreed to complete certain jobs for your employer you should finish these. Other wise they might start taking deductions from your final month’s salary.

Ask to see you boss in person; don’t let your intentions slip out before you’ve spoken to your boss.

  • You should prepare what you’re going to say in advance.
  • Can you anticipate what you boss will say to you? What would be your reply? Prepare.
  • Don’t bother making personal comments at this stage “I’m going because I can’t stand you any more”. Your boss really does not care, and you’re likely to need to come back for a reference later.
  • Make positive comments about the organisation as a place to work, thank them for allowing you the opportunity.

Your boss might try and fine out the real reason you’re going to find a new career. Even if there are personal issues, keep them to yourself, its not worth upsetting the apple cart at this late stage.

You should have a resignation letter, it should have your name, the name of the person you’ve handing it to, the date you’re handing in your resignation and your signature.

Working your notice before you start your new job.

  • Here are a few tips on working your notice period
  • Firstly you should have agreed your final salary settlement and when you last day of work will be.
  • Finish any work you said you would in your final agreement.
  • Try not to stop the job in the office by telling everyone where you’re going to or how good it is going to be for you at your new job. Its likely that they really don’t want to hear it. The more you do this the more you’ll annoy your current boss.
